The safety belt, esp. for a motor vehicle, has an electromagnetic locking device associated with a pawl catch. The electronic circuit includes a monoflop which produces an electric sensor signal when the acceleration exceeds a specified level (e.g. 0.4g) to prevent the harness catch from being disengaged when the accelerati on is excessive. The the termination of the period of excessive acceleration the monoflop or other device returns the lock to its initial setting so that the safety belt attachment may be released. The electromagnetic unit operates against the force of a mechanical soring.
