The braking monitor uses a required braking curve to provide reference values (V) for comparison with the actual velocity of the vehicle at spaced intervals during braking, with the braking circuit (B) controlled accordingly. A number of trackside devices (BP1, BP2A, BP2C) are spaced along the track (G) and cooperate with a sensor (BS) onboard the vehicle. The initial track side device (BP1) indicates the max. permissible speed of the vehicle upon reaching a signal point (H) ahead of it, with each of the other points (BP2A, BP2C) causing a comparison of the actual speed with a reference value to be made, the braking curve from which these values are supplied ensuring that the vehicle is braked to the permissible speed by the signal point (H). Each successive trackside point (BP2A BP2C) delivers information relating to max. permissible vehicle speed at that point, used to modify the braking curve.
