The sole of the running shoe comprises an outer sole extending from the heel to the ball of the foot and a plastics sole with spikes extending forwards from the outer sole. An intermediate sole which is mounted in the heel area above the welt extends forwards over the entire area of the plastics sole between this sole and the welt. The intermediate sole is made of a softer material than the welt so that now the base of the spikes feeds the pressure over the larger surface areas into the softer intermediate sole for greater comfort. The bending and rolling action of the shoe is also improved.
