Gripping jaws (11) are mounted on the tips of two curved scissor arms (1,2). These arms are connected to a linkage (4 to 7) so to swing about an axis (3) when opened and closed. The two jaws are mounted on rods (12) parallel to this pivot axis, so as to adjust to the shape of a pipe to be gripped. Each rod is mounted between the arms of a channel section forming the tip of each scissor arm. The edge (15) of the lower arm acts as a stop for the jaw. A resilient buffer is located between the bracket carrying the jaw and the edge of the channel. Each jaw consists of a flat plate with a pair of sharp pointed studs projecting from each end, to embed in the wall of the tube. The studs are of highly wear resistant metal and are retained by plates bolted to the plates forming the jaws.
