Holes for engagement by tongs-type tools used for opening lids on shafts, which as cable shafts, often difficult to open after prolonged closure, are sealed by a stopper affording protection from dirt. The stopper body (6) is fitted with an additional splaying element, pref. in the form of a stiffening cross arm stem piece (3). There may be clamping wedges (1) on both sides of the body, with shallow bottom slope and steeper top slope. The body may be curved downwards. It can be made of plastics. This provides considerable spreading and return force against the opposite curved sides of the opening duct.
