The use of quaternary ammonium salts which eliminate tertiary amines on exposure to light having a wavelength of 250-500 nm, in particular ammonium salts based on tertiary amines and having a molecular weight in the range 59-500, as latent catalysts in coating compositions based on polyurethane or epoxy resin precursors, coating compositions of said type containing ammonium salts of this type, and a process for the preparation of coatings in which any desired substrates are coated with coating compositions of this type, and the coating is subsequently cured by irradiation with light having a wavelength of between 250 and 500 nm.
