Prodn. of triarylphosphites P(OR)3 (I) (R is aryl opt. substd. by one or more opt. branched alkyl or by cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl) comprises reacting a P trihalide with ROH in the presence of 0.005-10 mole % (on ROH) of an aromatic N-contg. heterocycle as catalyst. Reaction is at 30-250 deg.C, opt. in presence of a solvent. The catalyst can be used as a salt derived from an inorganic acid or an organic sulphonic, phosphonic or carboxylic acid. (I) are (co)stabilisers for protecting polymers, e.g. polyolefins, against light- and heat-induced deterioration.
