The counterflow heat exchanger system in a sorption heat pump to obtain hot water uses a set of concentric tubes through which the water and heat exchange medium flow. The medium is passed through the absorber and the condenser or resorber so as to pass through at least three, preferably five separate heat exchange zones. The first and last zones are for heat exchange with the condenser or resorber, and the intermediate zone or zones includes the absorber alone, or where more zones are included the intermediate zone can include a combination of absorber and condenser zones. In one circuit, the medium passes through four separate zones the first being the condenser zone and the last being the absorber zone. The medium can pass through an additional final stage in heat exchange with a dephlegmator.
