The shipboard winch drum is particularly for use on a research vessel, there being a dividing flange between the outer drum flanges and clear of each outer flange. The dividing flange (5) is detachable from its mounting between the others (2,3), and can be secured to either of them. Where the drum is stepped, with sections of different dia. the dividing flange can be fixed either to the annular face (4) formed by the step, or to one of the others. Split grooved pulleys can be interchangeably fixed to the drum hub (1).
