Prepn. of bis-(2-ethylhexyl)ether (I) comprises reacting 2-ethylhexen-2-al (II) with 2-ethylhexanol (III) in the presence of an acid catalyst (IV) at 50-200 deg.C, and hydrogenating the resulting diene (V) over a transition or noble metal catalyst.
