The tiled stove or dutch oven with the hot gases travelling along a zig-zag path can be built up from a set of elements which are basically U shaped in section. In one design, two types of element (6,13) are used. The straight sections (2) of the zig-zag path are formed by plain channel elements (13) facing upwards and downwards, combined with flat dividing elements (3). The vertical sections (4) connecting the ends of the path are formed by further elements (6) with portions removed from their sides. Another design uses elements of a similar design but which interlock in a different pattern, with the flat tops of the second type of element fitted between two plain channels, with the joint lines visible at the vertical ends. A third design uses elements with cut-outs into which fit the flat elements.
