Voltage stabilising and smoothing reactor - comprises core with air gap and capacitor in parallel with winding

The air gap reactor has a core, e.g. of low loss grain oriented electrical sheet steel, and at least one winding. A larger than normal capacitor is connected across the winding, and a further, unsaturated choke in series with it. Instead of an air gap, or gaps, the reactor core can have localised core section restrictions. The components of the circuit form a low loss parallel resonant circuit which ensures that even quite large output loadings cannot detune it. The high stored energy in core and capacitor assists in bridging several cycles of loss of input voltage. The application is mainly for small inverters. It operates as a smoothing circuit to reduce harmonies and produce a stabilised sinusoidal output.
