The cover is for a manhole shaft in a roadway. The system allows continuous adjustability for level, and permanently effective clamping in position. There is a frame set in the roadway (4) to accommodate the cover. The frame is of double-shanked L-shaped cross-section, with its horizontal shanks serving as a mounting for the shaft cover (3), and its upright shank providing the space to accommodate the cover. The upright one may be tapered on both sides. The frame (2) may combine with the centrally mounted cover to define a wedge-shaped peripheral joint gap (5) for filling with ballast or gravel, for temporary cover fixing. This effectively clamps the cover in position, and precludes any need to break up the road surface.
