The biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) in aeration tanks of biological sewage treatment plants is determined by placing a certain quantity of a sewage-activated sludge mixt. in a reactor vessel with an overflow. Oxygen or air are passed through until a certain oxygen content has been reacted, and sewage with recycled sludge is continuously stirred into the reactor vessel. The BOD of the mixt. in the vessel is finally measured. This requires only simple and easily handled apparatus; it furnishes accurate results within a short time in all sewage treatment plants.
