The motor vehicle seat base (1) comprises an upper frame (2) supported on a lower frame (3) via pairs of crossed stays (4) forming a scissor linkage. One end (5,6) of each stay is pivoted (7,8) to one of the frames, whilst the other end (9,10) carries a roller (11,12) engaging a slide bearing (13,14) on one of the frames. A leaf spring or leaf spring pack (16) controls the relative vertical movement between the frames and preferably extends in longitudinal direction between them, being arranged either as a two-arm lever or as cantilever. One end of the spring may be pivoted (17) or resiliently secured (18) to a bracket (15) of the upper frame, whilst its central region is supported on a roller (19). Its other end supports a roller (21) in a further bracket (20) of the upper frame.
