A steam boiler (2) has a fluidised bed combustion chamber (1). The steam drives a turbine (3) and the condensate is returned through a hot well to the boiler. The flue gases pass through a direct contact water washer (5). This is operated so that while giving the gases a coarse wash it saturates them with steam. The saturated gases next pass through a gas turbine (7) which is operated so that the steam in the gases condenses. Fine particles remain in the water and are drained out before the gases are exhausted to atmosphere. The gas turbine can drive the air compressor (8) for the fluidised bed (1).
