Roller-reefing gear for sails - has epicyclic reduction gear between reefing-line-rotated drum and sail-luff-holding tubular section

The reefing gear for sails is basically conventional, comprising a drum with a reefing-line around it for rotating it in either direction, connected to a coaxial hollow-section to which the sail's luff is secured. However the connection between drum (11) and section (10) is via reduction gearing (6), pref. epicyclic. A fixed core (2) with an extension (3) through the section has a flange-plate (5) carrying the gear-annulus (15) and a spring-loaded expanding-shoe brake (7) connected to a linkage so arranged that pull on the reefing-line releases it. The reefing-line (14) is pref. endless.
