The system ensures that no environmental hazards are associated with salt which is distributed, with long-term effectiveness, for keeping surfaces free from ice and snow. Weatherproof mats, foil sheets or panels made of plastics, metal, concrete or other materials, are spread out on paths, steps, roads or squares. These contain hemispherical, oval or polygonal depressions, close together and impermeable to water. Salt, spread for thawing, falls into these and remains there. Concentration of the solution can be kept at an effective level by periodic additions of salt. Alternatively suitable depressions can be initially rolled into the surface.
