The satchel has a single carrying strap (15) which is fastened at both ends to the bottom of the satchel but to form the two sections which pass over each shoulder the strap runs through guides e.g. rings at the top of the satchel in the middle at the back. A single length adjustment member can be provided for both strap sections. There are preferably two guides (19) provided at the top for the strap wherein one guide is preferably also a clamping device. The manufacturing costs are substantially reduced with the provision of only one strap and its fastenings (161, 171).
