Refractory mass based on dry quartz or silica grains - plus binder which decomposes when heated to form only silica

The mass is made using quartz- or silica grains with max. size 7 mm, mixed with a liq. binder. When the binder is heated, it decomposes to leave a residue which consists only of silica. The pref. mass consists of 96% dry quartz or silica grains, plus 4% liq. binder. The binder pref. consists of an organic cpd. the organic part of which is decomposed by heat, alternatively, the binder may consist of an aq. material, the water being evaporated by heat. Silica bricks etc. normally contain lime or clay binders, which impair both the strength and the refractory properties of the bricks. The mass used by the invention contains only silica after it has been heated.
