The work clamp for e.g. a machine tool has a housing (1) with a block (20) underneath to fit into a guide groove and a clamping arm (8) projecting from one side. Between a top plate (5) and a bottom plate (15) is mounted a screw (3) with a nut (6). As the screw is rotated, the nut is lifted or lowered so as to raise or lower the inner end (7) of the arm. This arm is secured to a side plate by a hinge pin (14) with spring (9) coiled around it. The spring is hairpin shaped and its arms (13) fit between the top plate and the top of the inner end of the arm, holding that end down against the nut. This inner end has a vertical slot (16) through which the screw passes, for a balanced pressure.
