A filter vessel contains vertical hoses, which are sprayed in their bores with a descending stream of wash liq. contg. microorganisms, e.g. in the form of activated sludge. Gases to be purified flow horizontally through hoses from the bores of the latter. The microorganisms pref. consist of a biological concentrate designed to decompose odorous substances in the gas; and enzymes may be added to the wash liq.; located in the threads forming the hoses; or used to impregnate the hoses, to increase the activity of the microorganisms. A gas cleaner is pref. located upstream of the wet hose filter to remove most of the solids in the gas; and two or more wet hose filters contg. different microorganisms may be used in series to purify gases. Used esp. for deodorising waste gas from sewage drying plants, abattoirs, etc.
