The procedure for rapid, immediately reversible, variation of the bed mass in a fluidised-bed firing system uses a functionally independent internal supply and extraction system for the inert bed-material superimposed on the conventional external one. This system involves the bed air-inlet grating having openings connected by pipes to external hoppers. By varying the balance between bed-pressure at openings level and that of fuel-entraining medium fed into a central or peripheral fluidising system in the pipes, bed material can be transferred in either direction. The pipes have flow-arresting-gas inlets immediately below the openings.
