The mechanism is intended for loading and unloading workpieces, particularly in an automatic lathe. It comprises a housing (1) containing a shaft rotatable by a gear (11) and axially movable by a piston-cylinder unit (7,2). The shaft carries a work gripper on an arm. The movement into different angular positions is limited via adjustable stops (16). These stops also serve to limit the axial shaft movements via stop ring (18). The angular positions of the shaft are located by projections (32) on the gear which, under spring force (13), engage corresponding snap-in slots (33) in a component (1.1) fixed to the housing. A cam track (30) on the gear actuates a control (31) which reduces the rotational drive speed as an indexing position (32,33) is approached.
