Cellulose paper with filler-binder coating layer - has good ink acceptance and low ink penetration

Cellulose paper with a wt. of 60-100 g/sq.m. is comprised of a base paper with a surface layer with a wt. of 5-30 g/sq.m. on at least one side, comprising known fillers and binders with a filler content of ca. 90 wt.%. The base paper is pref. bulk sized and has a filler content of 5-15 wt.%, corresp. approximately to typing paper. The base paper may carry a solvent-tight barrier layer e.g. of polyvinyl alcohol. The coating layer may contain binders such as starch, CMC, PVA, casein or latex in an amt. of 5-30 wt.% and a filler such as kaolin, calcium silicate, aluminium silicate, calcium carbonate, aluminium hydroxide or TiO2. The paper surface may be sized with known sizing agents and the coating layer may be wet strengthened with a wet strengthening agent based on epichlorhydrin or melamine formaldehyde. The prods. are useful as printing papers with good ink acceptance properties or papers which can be written on both sides with no see-through of ink from one side to the other.
