A pressure spring and a cutting force spring are involved in cutting operations on the coal face in an underground mine using an adjustable spring-action planing appliance. The fixed inner guideway is connected to a pressure-force spring and a cutting-force spring with movement in cutting depth through an elongated hole and in cutting force with a rotatable recess, with a bolt. During the cutting operation, the chisel pref. presses the stop for the recess onto the cutting force spring, and opens the water valve. Wear is reduced, and economical cutting effected, on one side or on both sides.
