A mechanical guidance system counteracts involuntary deviations across the data lines, esp. prone to occur with documents larger than DIN A6. The handheld reader can be inserted in the guidance arrangement as necessary. The guidance system consists essentially of a guidance mechanism (1) and the inserted reading head (2) of a handheld reader. This is retained in a clamp (7,11) which may be moved in a carrier (10) bridging the guide track (3) along which the document moves. The document is held by a moving transport ribbon (6).
