There is a splaying zone insertable in a wall hole by driving in from the open end together with a protruding extension shaft, and a neck extending through the element. These members are incorporated in a spreader dowel for spaced attachment of cladding elements or components on a wall or ceiling. The neck (2) of the dowel has clamping lamellae (4) formed on it. These are axially spaced, pref. with a saw-tooth profile, with the longer flanks (6) turned towards the splaying zone. They may have gaps along the periphery of the neck end and the neck can be elastically compressible. This is simple in construction, and permits easy and rapid mounting of cladding elements of different thickness.
