Virulent Claviceps purpurea strain OKI 00163 - used to produce ergocristine with only insignificant amounts of secondary alkaloid(s) by infestation of rye

Prepn. of cultures of spores (used in the prepn. of drugs of a virulent strain of Claviceps purpurea on rye, to produce ergoecristine, comprises use of a new strain of Claviceps purpurea, registered at the Hungarian National Institute for Public Hygeien as No OKI 00163. New claviceps purpurea strain has a high aptitude to produce ergocristine (I). The strain has good sporulation properties in synthetic culture media and on agar surfaces as well as in submerged aerobic culture. The spores have good resistance and good keeping properties, they are viable andvirulent and when placed in a culture medium, 98-100% germination is obtd. and when placed on rye plants give an effective infestation. The drug produced has high alkaloid content and besides the main alkaloids contains only insignificant amts. of sec. alkaloids.
