Fireproof plastics-insulated electric cable or wire, esp. with wire(s) of thin section, each with an insulating layer contg. uncombustible material on each base wire uses, as this insulating layer, a mixt. of minerals (I), pref. based on silicates, and, as binder, a component (II) not melting quickly in the case of fire. (I) is mica and (II) a glass, pref. of low m.pt. (350-450 deg. C). The insulating layer pref. consists of a glass-ceramic mixt. (I) is in the form of fine powder. The layer consists mainly of (I) and is 0.001-1 mm thick,. The wire is coated with a powder mixt. of (I) and (II) electrostatically or by fluidised bed or flame spraying process, then heated to fuse (II) before applying the plastics or rubber insulation in the same or a later stage. The cable or wire remains functional for long periods and can be produced by usual methods.
