The housing has a circular recess (3) formed in its bottom (1) and containing a bearing element (5,6) which is pivoted about an axis perpendicular to the underneath of the housing. The bearing element is held in an adjustable axial position with a resilient element (12) sandwiched between the bearing element (6,7) and the housing bottom. Pref. the bearing element (5,6) comprises a curved sliding runner (5) incorporating a castor wheel (6), with the circular edge of the runner (5) fitting within the circular recess (3) and held in position by a roller bearing on which an annular disc (1) rests, the resilient element (12) positioned between the latter and the housing underneath (1). The bearing element is designed for smooth free movement of the vacuum cleaner housing in all directions.
