The energy saving switch for a bridge rectifier circuit is arranged so that half the bridge may be disconnected when power demand is low. In order to reduce the energy required by the switch itself (1) the circuit design uses a manually operated, electromagnetic holding winding switch (1) to connect two rectifiers (GL1, GL2) into the bridge (GL1, GL2, GL3, GL4) circuit. The switch (1) has a normal rest state 'off' position to which it automatically returns when the power requirement from the circuit drops. The continuous power drain from the circuit is supplied by two rectifiers (GL3, GL4). The switch design may be multipole, double throw as required. As a half bridge the effective output voltage, half that of a full bridge and is also proportional to peak voltage.
