The upholstering machine for covering seats, chair backs etc., has a support table (2) mounted on a vertical column (13) so that it can be raised and lowered towards a pressure plate (3) above. The covering material is stretched over the article to be covered, carried by the table, and folded inwards and underneath and retained by a securing member (6) formed by a strip running round the edge of the underside. The whole can be rotated about the axis of the vertical column so that a railing or stapling mechanism supported alongside can be used to secure the covering material. Various methods of folding the material around the edges of the support can be used, including a pneumatic system. Also various method of holding the folded edges in position can include a hooked or spiked pressure member.
