Mainly-to fully-synthetic soap bar properties are improved by adding up to 10 (esp 1-3) wt % w.r.t. soap wt., of Gp III and/or IV metal salts, (A), with inorganic and/or short-chain organic acids. The metals are esp Al, Zr and Ti. Pref (A) is Al formate, esp Al triformate. (A)-addn lowers so-called "flooding" i.e. swelling in water to form a jelly-like slimy compsn., e.g. to 88-37% of initial value. In an example a"syndet" soap bar was out of 40 pts 90% Na coconut fat alkyl sulphate, 10 pts tallow fat alcohol, 10 pts glycerol monostearate, 5 pts talcum, 30 pts starch, 4.8 pts water and 0.2 pts TiO2. The addn of (i) 1%, (ii) 3% Al triformate lowered "flooding"from 34.4- to (i) 26.6-, (ii)21.4%;pH (in 5% soln) from 6.6- to (i) 5.1, (ii) 4.6%; and wear from 14- to (i) 12.4- (ii) 11.3% at 20 deg C, and from 33.7- to (i) 35.9-, (ii)33.3% at 37 deg C.
