The measuring method precisely determines the position of a leak in a pipe containing a fluid under pressure, partic. a water main, using the interference generated by the leak in the form of noise, pressure alteration or light absorption. In a first stage, a detector (5) for the interference from the leak (2) is thrust into the pipe with its connecting cable (6), until it picks it up. In a second stage, the detector is located in the pipe, typically by measuring the cable, or by an inductive search operation. Measurements can be made with the pipe under pressure, and the detector can be a microphone picking up the noise generated at the leak.
