The clock uses a programme-controlled electroacoustic signal generator. The output (14) of a battery voltage control circuit (13) is fed to the reversing input (15) of a signal sequence programme control (8), so that a different chime is provided when the hour hand (6) reaches a given position to indicate that the battery requires replacement. Pref. the battery voltage control circuit (13) is only activated when a chime is due to be given to prevent unnecessary battery loading, via a control circuit release input (20) controlled in dependence on the displayed time in parallel with the signal sequence programme control (8). The reversing input (15) of the latter is pref. fed to a switch closing a feedback path of the programme store to alter the signal sequence.
