Dimensionally stable, softly abradable adhesive stick contains water-soluble alkali silicates, e.g. water glass, and/or quat. ammonium silicates, as the adhesive component, and 2-25 wt.%, w.r.t. total stick wt., of a builder-forming gel of an alkali salt of a 12-28C aliphatic carboxylic acid in water and/or aq. water-miscible organic solvents. The adhesive component may contain further water-soluble adhesives, e.g. polyvinyl pyrrolidone, polyacrylic acid, polyacrylamide or cellulose ethers, wt. ratio organic:inorganic adhesive being 2:10 to 20:10. The adhesive is used to bond paper, wood and veneers opt. to non-porous materials, e.g. metals or plastics. It is rigid, easily and cleanly applied without dripping, and resists storage.
