The mechanism transports rod-shaped items such as cigarettes, these being delivered sideways in first and second streams with the ends in one extending in the opposite direction to those in the other. A transfer conveyor delivers them from one or both streams to a point where the streams are combined, with all ends on the same side. The transfer conveyor (26, 46, 50) transports them sideways in stacks along two separate curved tracks and round axes at right angles to the travel direction and to the items on the tracks. Preferably the transfer conveyor consists of several conveyor sections.
