ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREA method of making Si3N4 based cutting tools isdisclosed. A uniform mixture of Si3N4 powder, having anSiO2 surface coating, and 4-12% by weight HfO2 is prepared.The mixture is hot pressed to substantially full densityand the pressed body is shaped as a cutting tool.
