The tool consists of a substrate which is covered with at least two layers (I,II). Layer (I) is max. 0.1 mm thick, and consists of Al2O3, pref. contg. up to 5 wt.% TiO2. Layer (I) is covered with one or more layers (II), the last layer (II) entering into contact with molten glass. Each layer (II) is max. 0.1 mm thick, and consists of the oxides of Al; Zr- Al + Zr- or Zr + Y; and each of these oxides may be used together with SiO2. One pref. tool is a mould coated with a layer (I) contg. 96% Al2O3, 2% TiO2, and then Al2O3 (II), each layer being 0.025-0.05 mm thick. The substrate of mould pref. consists of cast iron, steel, or a light metal. Moulds etc. are provided with smooth surfaces resisting wear and corrosion.
