An electrophotographic copier of slit illumination type is constructed such that the illuminating slit device has a protective housing (30) with a light throughput (32) for the images of the original (8) on to the image carrier surface (2a). A slit control section (34, 34') having a winged section (52, 54, 58, 60) is attached to the housing (30) in a rotatable manner, also having a slit width controlling device, the width of which at right angles to the drum axis is reduced in size but inclines towards both the opposite edges, so that the slit is broad at the centre and narrow at the edges. The slit control device (34, 34') can be moved within the light throughput (32).
