1482897 Spinning yarns HOLLANDSE SIGNAALAPPARATEN BV 12 April 1976 [22 April 1975] 14938/76 Heading D1F In a method of making fine (e.g. 15 tex count) "twistless" yarn from a sliver or roving of staple fibres which is wetted and drafted in wet condition and the resultant thinner strand subsequently false-twisted and bonded, the wetting operation is effected with a liquid mixture, perhaps aqueous, containing a latent solvent for at least a portion of the staple fibre (only some of the fibres and/or only surface portions of the fibres); bonding is effected by activation of the solvent by raising the temperature to a value above that at which the liquid mixture (except for the solvent and components/additives it is desired to retain) is removed from the strand and below the melting point of the fibres to be (partially) dissolved; drying of the strand is effected under evaporation of the solvent. As described the fibre strand is brought into contact with the surface of a rotated heated drum whereon occur the successive steps of removing unmounted elements of the liquid mixture, activation of the solvent and evaporation thereof. Examples describe polyacrylonitrile fibre and polyacrylonitrile/ cotton fibre blend rovings treated with solvent on the bases of tetramethylene sulphone to which a wetting agent is added.
