In this process, the rheological properties of bitumen and bituminous compositions are modified by adding compounds of the formula R1-R2-CONR3-R4-NR5R6 in which R1 is H, an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical having up to 8 carbon atoms, or a COOH or NH2 radical, R2 is aromatic or cylcoaliphatic hydrocarbon radical, R3 is H or an -R4-NR5R6 radical, R4 is a divalent aliphatic hydrocarbon radical having up to 6 carbon atoms, R5 and R6 are aliphatic hydrocarbon radicals having up to 4 carbon atoms. The compounds, for example N-(3-dimethylpropylamino)-p-tert-butylbenzamide, N-(4-dimethylaminobutylamino)phthalamide and N-(2-dimethylaminoethylamino)tetrahydrophthalamide, are added to the starting composition in an amount of 0.1 to 5 % by weight. The additives for achieving certain rheological properties can be determined for selected starting compositions by experiments.
