A haemoglobin prepn. of intravenous injection, having a high oxygen liberating power compared to erythrocytes and haemoglobin solns. comprises a haemoglobin-pyridoxal phosphate condensn. prod. causing no pyrogenic reactions and having a life of 2-9 hours in the circulatory system. In an example erythrocytes were mixed with NaCl and beta-propiolactone soln, then washed with aq. NaHCO3 and NaCl Haemolysis was effected using Dowex 50WX 8(RTM) H+ form, adjusted to pH 5.5-5.7 and sepd. The supernatant soln. was diluted, adjusted to pH 7.5 washed and oxygen eliminated, with N2. It was then treated with pyridoxal-5-phosphate monohydrate (3.5. moles per mole of haemoglobin tetramer) stirred for 1 hr. at 20 degrees C and washed. The prod. was filtered off at pH 7.6.
