Prepn. of a stable, aq. dispersion of a colophony-based material takes place in the presence of an anionic dispersant. Process comprises homogenising an unstable aq. dispersion contg. by wt., 25-30% solids, consisting, by wt., of 0-95% colophony and of 100-5% adduct of colophony and of an acid cpd. contg. the C=C-C=O gp. Quantity of acid cpd., bonded as adduct, is 1-20 wt. % of total solids. Homogenising is effected under 141-562 atmos. excess press., at 125-180 degrees C. Pref. anionic dispersant is a saponified colophony-based material, (I) and/or a synthetic emulsifier e.g., alkylaryl sulphonate salt. Dispersion is used in sizing cellulosic fibres for paper mfr., using "internal" or "externalc sizing methods. Paper sheets have improved resistance to penetration of water and aq. ink.
