The volute chamber (1) of a large hydraulic turbine has an inner steel shell which is supported by two concentric rings (6) of L-shaped cross-section. The turbine stator (2) is formed by radial blades (7) which extend across the outlet from the volute chamber. The steel shell (3) is covered with concrete (4) which is reinforced with rings (5). The rings (5) are anchored to radial ribs (9) attached to the 'L' section rings (6). The dimensions of the attachment are so chosen that the ratio 1:h is between 0.6 and 0.8. With these dimensions the moment due to the tension (T1) in the shell (3) balances the moment due to the tension (T2) in the reinforcing ring (5).
