Mechanical seal for high speed pump shaft - has lubricated fixed and rotating sealing elements to improve extraction of heat

The mechanical seal is esp. for shaft in pumps or compressors which rotates at high speed and is subjected to high temp. and pressures. This draws off heat arising from the sliding action while simultaneously ensuring that the sealing surface is actively lubricated. The seal comprises a sealing element (4) made from a sintered hard alloy which rotates with the shaft (3) through a key coupling (5) and a stationary sealing element (7) which interact via sliding surfaces (8). Curved grooves (14) in at least one surface of the sealing elements produces a lubricating film. Several U-shaped grooves (16) in the other leading end (15) generates turbulence in the cooling medium and improves heat extraction efficiency.
