The road (2) has tracks (3, 4) and in these, near the surface are embedded circuits (6, 8). One circuit (6) has two main sections (10, 11) parallel to road length and near the track centres. Each has an insulated conductor (12, 13) wound around a magnetic core with flanges. The conductors (12, 13) are joined by a conductor (24) and to conductors (25, 26) to the secondary of a transformer (28). This is fed via a switch (30). Vehicle detectors (32, 38) are also used to detect that the vehicle has passed. The signals pass to the input of a stepped motor control (39). The motor shaft is connected to an arm (44) which touches a fixed contact (47), in turn in the transformer circuit.
