The apparatus is used for applying paint to an underwater surface and comprises an air turbine (6) rotating a brush (2) at high speed. Its bristles (7) are angled to expell the water and create a suction, causing the unit to adhere to the surface (10) being painted. The turbine also rotates a second brush (3) at a reduced speed, through a worm drive (20, 21). This second brush operates within an enclosed chamber (27), supplied with paint (28). The brush has a reciprocating motion, its bristles (25) intermittently projecting through a fine mesh (26) rotating with the brush. Paint fills the chamber, water being unable to enter through the mesh.
