The flanges and webs which are to be welded together to make a girder are located on a clamping bed located underneath a portal travelling longitudinally in direction (Y) on rails located on each side of the bed, which is fitted with a turnover device. The turnover device pref. consists of two parts, one being mounted on the portal whereas the other is located on a separate portal driven by a motor. Each part pref. includes a clamping heat rotated by a motor to turn a girder through 180 degrees in the plane at 90 degrees to the longitudinal axis of the girder. The two heads can pref. move in the transverse direction (X), i.e. at 90 degrees to direction (Y); and each head has hydraulic clamps gripping the girder while the latter is being turned over, i.e. through 180 degrees. Girders can be mfd. without the need for an overhead travelling crane when turning the beams through 180 degrees.
